Kingsborough – Department of Behavioral Science Committees

Department of Behavioral Sciences’ Committee for Certifying Online Teaching        2020 – Present

  • Taking part in a five-person committee that created a certification process for online teaching for the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Human Services.
  • Helped to co-create a rubric that is currently being used to assess online teaching within the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Human Services.
  • Assessed several applications for the online teaching certification that was submitted to the committee.
  • Created and edited notes for all committee meetings.

Department of Behavioral Sciences’ Assessment Committee for Courses                   2020 – 2021

  • Taking part in a seven-person committee that seeks to improve instructional practice by designing and implementing a process of formative and summative assessments for several courses in the Department of Behavioral Sciences, starting with PSY 3200 (Human Development).
  • Focus of the committee is on focus on helping faculty examine their own practice as they seek to support the development of their students.
  • Helping to co-create a rubric that will be used to assess student learning, growth, and outcomes within reviewed courses.
  • Created and edited notes for committee meetings.

Department of Behavioral Sciences’ Committee for Online Course Development       2019 – Now

  • Working with other members of the Behavioral Sciences and Human Services department to create a uniform online Introduction to Psychology course for the Kingsborough Flex online degree program.
  • In order to teach further courses in the Kingsborough Flex program, received further training through the June 2019 Preparation for Teaching Online workshop, hosted by the CUNY School of Professional Studies.
  • In the Fall 2019 semester, began teaching an Introduction to Psychology course through the Kingsborough Flex online degree program.

Kingsborough – Department of Behavioral Science Projects and Accomplishments

Department of Behavioral Science – Analyst for Education Program                          2021

  • Created and analyzed two reports on the varied factors that influence the number of semesters that students within the Education Studies program required to complete the education program and to graduate.
  • Used internal reports from Education program and CUNY First transcript data on Education Studies students to generate the reports.
  • Report 1 focused on the impact of GPA on the semesters that Education Studies students needed to finish their education courses (once they declared their major) and graduate from Kingsborough.
  • Report 2 revealed the impact of ASAP program involvement on the semesters that Education Studies students needed to finish their education courses and graduate from Kingsborough.

Department of Behavioral Science – Introduction to Psychology for KCC Flex            2019 – 2020

  • Co-created and taught the first online Introduction to Psychology course for the entirely online KCC Flex program.

Introduction to Psychology Research Pool Development Program                                 2019 – Now

  • Took part in organizing documents to create a research pool among students attending Introduction to Psychology courses within the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Human Services.
  • In Fall 2019, launched two new studies on food insecurity in community college that used the Introduction to Psychology research pool.

Kingsborough – College-Wide Committees

Kingsborough COACHE Committee                                                                            2022 – Present

  • Serving as the liaison for the Kingsborough Historically Underrepresented Faculty & Staff Resource Center for the COACHE committee.
  • Attending meetings, taking notes, and offering feedback on how to submit the COACHE survey to Kingsborough faculty in the Spring 2023 semester.

Kingsborough Awards Committee                                                                                2021 – Present

  • Served as the liaison for the Behavioral Sciences Department on the Kingsborough Awards Committee.
  • Solicited student names and feedback for the following awards: Behavioral and Human Sciences Award, Education Studies Award, Early Childhood/Child Care Award, and Yuet Chun and Tai Yee Ma Memorial Scholarship Fund.
  • Presented student names and feedback to the department chair and division coordinators to help them choose recipients for the reward.
  • Attended and took notes on the committee in order to support their work.

Kingsborough Food Committee                                                                                     2019 – 2020

  • Served as the liaison for the Behavioral Sciences Department on the Kingsborough Food Committee.
  • Shared research on food insecurity among Kingsborough students with committee during meetings.

Kingsborough Service – College-Wide Projects and Accomplishments

Tenure and Promotion Mentorship Circle                                                                     2022 – Present

  • Taking part in the Fall 2022 Writing and Scholarship Circle lead by Drs. Alison Better and Tamara Bellomo, along with other junior faculty members.
  • Taking part in discussions on how to maximize opportunities to succeed in higher education, as well as to obtain positive decisions on tenure and promotion.

  • Taking part in the Fall 2022 Writing and Scholarship Circle lead by Drs. Jason VanOra and Alison Better, along with other Kingsborough colleagues.
  • Submitted fellowship application and revise-and-resubmit journal article for critique and revision.
  • Submitting written and oral critiques for work of colleagues.
  • Taking part in discussions on scholarship and student research engagement in higher education.

Universal Design Learning Seminar                                                                              2022

  • Took part in the Summer 2022 Universal Design Leaning (UDL) Seminar lead by Dr. Loretta Taras and Susan Lambert of the Kingsborough Center for e-Learning (KCeL).
  • Met on a regular basis to discuss UDL principles, techniques, and strategies with Dr. McKinney and other members of the fellowship cohort.
  • Revised syllabus, lectures, and other course materials to reflect UDL principles and strategies.

Open Pedagogy Fellowship                                                                                            2022

  • Took part in the Spring 2022 Open Pedagogy Fellowship led by Dr. Ryan McKinney.
  • Met on a regular basis to discuss open education opportunities, techniques, and strategies with Dr. McKinney and other members of the fellowship cohort.
  • Created an open pedagogy project (“Community Health Project”) that asks students to utilize open-source health data from the New York City Department of Health that reviews the rates of COVID-19 vaccination and infection within their communities.
  • The Community Health Project will be piloted in the Fall 2022 semester.

Kingsborough IGNITERS Collaborative Research Group                                            2020 – Present

  • Cofounded the Kingsborough INGNITERS Collaborative Research Group to receive and give support for ongoing research projects and related applications with other Kingsborough faculty members.
  • Meet on a weekly basis with others in the group to discuss the current state of our research.
  • Collaborate with other group members on grant applications and research projects.
  • Work on applications such as that for the CUNY Recovery Corps Internship through NYC Department of Youth & Community Development’s Summer Youth Employment Program.
  • Supported colleague Dr. Jeremy Sawyer on his National Science Foundation CAREER grant as a consultant for the qualitative elements of his project.

Kingsborough Historically Underrepresented Faculty & Staff Resource Center          2020 – Present

  • Took part in workshops and in mentoring program as a mentee of Dr. Emily Schnee.
  • Attended the 2022 Faculty Women of Color in Academia (FWCA) conference on behalf of HURFS-RC.
  • Submitted a personal reflection and final report detailing my experiences at the FWCA conference to share with other HURSF-RC members.

Guest Lecture for Brooklyn Public Library’s College Experience Event                      2021

  • Presented a guest lecture on attachment theory for prospective Kingsborough students who attended the Brooklyn Public Library’s virtual College Experience event.
  • Answered questions on attachment theory and Psychology courses for prospective students.

New Student Orientation for Fall 2020 Semester                                                          2020

  • Represented the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Human Services during digital orientation.
  • Answered questions about Psychology courses and sub-program, as well as research opportunities for undergraduates.

Student Services Brochure for Spring 2020                                                                   2020

  • Created a brochure (titled: “A Student’s Guide to Resources at CUNY Kingsborough Community College on Spring 2020) in order to expand students’ knowledge of the various services available to them inside and outside of the Kingsborough community.
  • Services listed in brochure include support services offered by the KCC Single Stop office (housing support, enrollment in health insurance, legal aid, dates and times of food pantry, etc.), food resources available within local communities and provided by the New York City government, mental health resources inside and outside of Kingsborough, technology support inside and outside of Kingsborough, and various government initiatives (such as city unemployment benefits, registration to vote, and online link to US Census 2020).
  • Brochures were shared with students in my own courses, professors within the Kingsborough’s Behavioral Sciences department, Single Stop Director Hattie Elmore, Director of Academic Affairs Stephanie Akunvabey, and Communications Publications Editorial Manager Pittershawn Palmer.

Achieving the Dream Equity Initiative                                                                          2020 – Present

  • Represented Kingsborough Community College as an attendee at the Dream 2020 conference.
  • Shared notes and major findings from three plenary talks and six sessions with other Kingsborough colleagues who also attended the conference.
  • Participated in follow-up workshop on “Equity in the Classroom” by Dr. Donna McKusick, the new Achieving the Dream data coach for Kingsborough Community College.

Kingsborough Safe Zone Ally Workshop                                                                        2019

  • Participated in a three-hour workshop to be a Safe Zone Ally for the LGBTQ community at Kingsborough Community College.

  • Represented the entire Department of Behavioral Sciences and Human Services.
  • Answered questions about Anthropology, Psychology, and Sociology courses and sub-programs, as well as research opportunities for undergraduates

Kingsborough Urban Farm                                                                                              2018 – Now

  • Co-created a survey on students’ use of programs held within the Urban Farm.
  • Co-created a successful grant application for the Kingsborough’s Presidential Faculty Innovation Awards in order to assess the impact of the Urban Farm’s food support programs on the student body.
  • Launched the Research on Food Insecurity seminar series along with the Urban Farm’s Food Educator, Glenda Ullauri.
  • Currently working with the new farm administrator, Dr. Shannon Caravello, to understand more about the services that students would like the farm to offer.

Kingsborough Center for Teaching and Learning                                                          2018 – Now

  • Participated in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning workshop in Spring 2019.
  • Took part in the Year 1 Faculty seminar, a training program for new faculty members.

Bronx Community College Student Services Brochure for Spring 2020                       2020

  • Created a brochure (titled: “A Student’s Guide to Resources at CUNY Bronx Community College on Spring 2020) in order to expand students’ knowledge of the various services available to them inside and outside of the Bronx Community College campus.

CUNY Central Office of University Media Relations                                                    2019 – Now

  • Cooperated on a press report that focused on CUNY’s multifaceted efforts to support food-insecure students.
  • Represented CUNY and Kingsborough Community College to reporters from the New York Times, Politico, the Missoulian, and Heated by Medium and Mark Bittman.
  • Hosted CUNY Communications and Marketing’s Advanced Media Services video team as they shot footage of the Kingsborough Urban Farm and student researchers studying food support programs within the Research Seminar on Food Insecurity in Summer 2019.
  • Also conducted a twenty-minute interview on past and ongoing food research studies with the CUNY Advanced Media Services video team.

Community Service

UnHomeless NYC: Transformative Public Humanities Project                                     2021 – Present

  • Created and evaluated the results of a pre- and post-intervention survey that allowed the event organizers to better understand how the intervention session shaped attendees’ understanding of homeless and housing insecurity.
  • Worked with the BFAMFAPhD artist/activist collective group to prepare an exhibit on housing insecurity for the UnHomeless NYC: Transformative Public Humanities Project.
  • Was invited to and attended workshops that the BFAMFAPhD hosted for Kingsborough faculty, staff, and students on housing insecurity in the college community.
  • Presented on research regarding the link between food insecurity and housing insecurity among Kingsborough students.
  • Currently working with organizer Dr. Midori Yamamura on a series of other projects regarding housing insecurity among community college students.

Witness for the New York City Council                                                                         09/18/2019

  • Testified on the importance of ear-marking funds for the creation of campus food security programs similar to those run by CUNY Kingsborough Community College’s Urban Farm and Bring It Home food education program.
